Moving to Wyoming? Here's What You Need to Know!

Welcome to Wyoming. A state with a rich and diverse culture that has been shaped by its history, has a frontier state and its natural beauty. From cowboy culture and western art to an abundance of outdoor activities, our geology and our Native American history, there is something for everyone in Wyoming. This state is like a quilt, woven together with many colors and many shapes each perfectly fitting with one another to make it my and many others’ favorite place on earth. Hi, I’m Alisha Collins with the Alisha Collins real estate team and I love Wyoming. Of course, there are many reasons to love it here but what the heck are they? Let’s talk about my favorite thing about Wyoming. Besides the horses and the wildlife and of course, the beautiful outdoors. Okay, maybe I don’t just have one favorite, but one of my favorite things about Wyoming is the culture.

So, what kind of culture will you find in Wyoming? Of course, you’ll find the cowboy culture. One of the most iconic aspects of Wyoming’s culture is our cowboy heritage. We’re talking rodeos, cattle ranching, and western lifestyle. All of these things have played a significant role in shaping the state’s identity. Visitors of Wyoming can experience the cowboy culture firsthand by attending a rodeo or touring and working ranch, or like I do, ranch sorting. You can even see a sliver of the culture when you visit a local restaurant that is supplied by local ranches or maybe stop by county fair and watch the youth of the area show off their home raised projects like pigs, sheep, chicken, goats, and steers. Or they may also be showing off skills important to the area such as rifle shooting, livestock judging, or meat judging. Of course, that’s not all, but we don’t have all day.

Wyoming culture is based on moral values that include helping your neighbor and looking out for one another. A hard day’s work means a whole lot here. Beyond the cowboy culture, there are more things I would like to mention like Western art. Wyoming is home to a thriving art scene especially western art with several museums and galleries showcasing the work of local and regional artists. Wyoming is also home to several annual art festivals including the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in Cody and Cheyenne Frontier Days Art show. You can find many forms of western art, painting, sculptures, jewelry, photography and so much more.

To cover more great things about Wyoming, of course, we’ve got to mention hunting and fishing. Here in Wyoming, we are known for our vast expanses of wilderness and our abundant natural resources including river, streams, and lakes. These areas provide excellent opportunities for hunting and fishing, and the state is home to a variety of species, including elk, deer, and trout.

The Wild West Wyoming’s history as a frontier state has left a lasting legacy with many residents and visitors being drawn to the state’s Wild West image. From the legendary outlaws of the Wild West to the Cowboys who helped settle the state. Wyoming’s history is intertwined with the myths and legends of the American West. I think that’s pretty cool.

You know what else Wyoming has an abundance of? Native American Culture. Wyoming has been home to several Native American tribes, including Arapaho, Cheyenne, Crow, Shoshone, Sue, Ute, and many others. These tribes have a rich cultural heritage with traditions and customs that have been passed down through the generations. Today, the 2.2 million acre Wind River Reservation in Central Wyoming is home to the Easter Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes. Visitors to Wyoming can learn more about Native American culture by visiting one of the states many tribal museums or by attending a powwow or other cultural event. There is so much to learn about and to appreciate when it comes to the incredible Native American culture that Wyoming has to offer.

Wyoming is home to two of the country’s most iconic national parks, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Yellowstone is America’s very first national park and it has a collection of beauty beyond compare. Grand Teton National Park is the home of the Teton Mountain range. That is often what people think of when they think of Wyoming. These parks are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna as well as a wide range of recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Beyond just the national and state parks are wide open spaces and varied terrain, make Wyoming a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and biking in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Several rock climbing areas including the world famous Devil’s Tower National Monument. Wyoming has something for everyone.

Remember when I mentioned rodeos a couple minutes ago? Let’s talk about them. Again, rodeos are a popular form of entertainment in Wyoming with many towns and cities hosting annual rodeos and other cowboy themed events. Cheyenne Frontier Day’s Rodeo is one of the biggest and most well-known rodeos in the country, attracting visitors from all around the world which is how it got its nickname Daddy Of Them All. In Wyoming, you will find rodeo competition that include almost all-age-ranges. There are rodeos with teeny tots, high school rodeo, teams college rodeos, ranch rodeos, and community rodeos. A rodeo is one of the best excuses to throw on some boots and jeans and cheer on the competitors’ along with an excited crowd.

Agriculture has always been an important part of Wyoming’s economy and culture. The state is home to a number of large cattle ranches and farms which produce a wide range of crops and livestock. Agriculture is important here. It’s often a generational thing that is taught and passed down from the elders to the young. Middle and high school students can take agriculture classes and are given the option to join clubs like FFA, and 4-H that stress the importance of agriculture.

We can’t talk about Wyoming without mentioning oil and gas. Wyoming is a major producer of oil and natural gas. These industries have had a significant impact on the state’s economy and our culture. Wyoming’s energy sector employs thousands of people and provides a vital source of revenue for the state. Casper is actually nicknamed the Oil City. Wyoming’s culture is a unique blend of its history, natural beauty and diverse economic and recreational opportunities. From the cowboy culture and the western art to the land and the water. Wyoming is a melting pot of differences that have come together to form a place unlike anywhere else on Earth.
