Why Casper, Wyoming is One of the Best Places to Retire! Why Casper, Wyoming is One of the Best Places to Retire! đĄđ Are you considering retiring in Wyoming? Whether youâre planning your next big move or just exploring your options, you might be surprised to learn that Casper, Wyoming has been ranked #9 on WalletHubâs list of Best Places to Retire** out of 182 cities across the U.S.! In this video, I dive into why Casper earned such a high ranking, what makes it a great place for retirees, and a few things to consider before making the move. Casper offers affordable living, low taxes, a strong sense of community, and endless outdoor activitiesâall of which make it an attractive destination for those looking to enjoy their golden years. With no state income tax, low property taxes, and a cost of living significantly lower than many other retirement destinations, Wyoming is one of the most financially friendly places to settle down. But what about quality of life? According to WalletHub, Casper ranked 3rd in affordability, 29th in quality of life, and 72nd in activities. While I agree with many of the rankings, I think they may have underestimated just how much there is to do hereâfrom hiking, fishing, and skiing to music venues, museums, golf courses, and a tight-knit, welcoming community. One area where Casper scored lower is healthcare, ranking 88th overall. While the city has great basic healthcare facilities, the number of specialists is limited due to the smaller population. However, with major medical centers in Denver, Billings, and Salt Lake City within a few hoursâ drive, those needing specialized care still have options. So, is Casper, Wyoming the right place for your retirement? I break down all the factors to help you make an informed decision. Hi, Iâm Alisha Collins with the Alisha Collins Real Estate team, and it came as no surprise to me that Casper, Wyoming is in the top 10 best places, and actually Casperâs number nine on WalletHubâs list of best places to retire.
Okay, it may have been a little bit of a surprise with all the places WalletHub could have chosen. You probably already know I love living here because, letâs be honest, there are a lot of amazing reasons to live in Casper. But Casper is number nine on a list of 182 cities. That is a pretty big deal. I appreciate that they even considered cities in Wyoming since we are sometimes overlooked on a lot of the best of lists. They considered the most populated cities in the US, plus, in less populated states, they included at least two of the most populated cities from each. Some of the company that made it into the top 10 did surprise me a little. I mean, when you think about it, a lot of people consider retiring somewhere warm, like Florida or Arizona, so while it isnât surprising that, out of the top 10, there were five different cities in Florida, plus Scottsdale, Arizona, and even Atlanta, Georgia didnât really surprise me, but Cincinnati, Ohio, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, did surprise me a little.
Seeing those on the list and me digging a little deeper into the reasons those cities were chosen to see exactly why they were and to understand better how Casper stacks up. WalletHub considered the areas of affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare, and gave each city a score, combining these factors, and determined their rank. If you have watched any of my other videos, you will know that one of my favorite things about Casper, and ultimately about Wyoming in general, is related to all of the outdoor activities that are possible, whether you live here or are just visiting here. No matter the season, there is always something to do outdoors, and I have to say that I disagree with WalletHubâs assertion that Casper was ranked so low, 72nd on their activities list. I think their methodology must be quite different than mine. Iâd love to hear what you think, but personally, I would still rank Casper as one of the best places in the country for recreation, and that includes outdoor options for all, including retirees. Plus, Casper has museums, music venues, golf courses, like we are here, and so much more, so Casper is more than just an outdoorsy destination. It makes perfect sense to me that Casper was ranked third for affordability, especially when compared to some of the other cities on the list. For example, New York comes in at 182nd on affordability. We all know that Casper is definitely more affordable than New York. This ranking considered several things that are important to pretty much everyone, such as cost of living and taxpayer friendliness, but also more specific things relevant to retirees, things like estate or inheritance taxes, cost of in-home services, and cost of adult daycare. I have to admit, although I had considered some of the factors they included in their ratings, some of these factors are not factors that I had really given much thought about before now. I have looked closely and have talked about the tax benefits of living here in Wyoming. I mean, the powerful combination of having no state income tax as well as low property taxes make living in Wyoming a definite financial plus. When you add in additional factors, such as home costs that are lower than the national medium, and Casper sounds like a great place to retire, financially at least. After checking out this ranking, I can see how Wyoming has some great benefits for those nearing retirement age. Another rating that pushed Casper towards the top of the list was ranking 29th on the quality of life ranking. This quality of life ranking is a bit different than others you might have seen. Sure, like other studies, it considers water and air quality and crime levels, but it also considers criteria that is specific to those of retirement age, such as cityâs age-friendly community, the overall age of the population, and elder-friendly labor market, walkability, and other factors. Casper has pretty good air and water quality and low crime levels by comparison. One factor that probably pushed the ranking a little higher on the list was having an incredibly caring and generous community. I really can vouch for this one. Casper is home to some of the best people in the world, and altogether, that makes quite a caring community. On the other hand, WalletHubâs list also considered mild weather, and ultimately, I canât really vouch for that one, at least, not all the time. Sure, Casper has some beautiful weather at all seasons, but, with the wind, like today, and the cold, and the snow during winter, Casperâs weather really canât be described as mild. My hands are freezing today, by the way. I do not wear coats when I do these videos, I donât know why, I never have, and so Iâm a little chilly today. Anyway, Casperâs lowest ranking subject area was in healthcare. WalletHubâs list placed Casper 88th, which is still within the top half of the rankings. Their list considers both a number and quality of different aspects of healthcare, such as doctors, physical therapists, and facilities. Based on that, Casper being ranked roughly in the middle of the healthcare sounds about right to me. I havenât done the number-checking myself, but I can say that while Casper does have some quality basic healthcare options, I donât think we have nearly enough. Sometimes the time it takes to get into the doctor can seem like forever. Additionally, there is a noticeable lack of specialists available across a large number of medical specialties. It makes sense with our smaller population. There isnât quite enough demand to justify a full-time practice for some of the different specialists. Luckily, Denver and Billings are only four hours away, and Salt Lake is only about six hours away for those that need something that you canât find here. So now you know the reasons that WalletHub ranked Casper 9th on the best places to retire, and you also know the way I agree and disagree with their list. Each individual, of course, will have their own experience, but hopefully this video helps you understand a little bit more about what it takes to retire in Wyoming.
