Choosing where to live is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make, and Wyoming and Florida cannot be more different. For this comparison, I’ll primarily be referring to Polk County because it’s very similar to Wyoming towns. One thing to note, both of these beautiful states have absolutely no state income tax, and you can check out the video I made about US states with no state income tax right here. Whether you’re craving solitude or vibrant energy, I’ve got the data to help you make your decision with clarity. I’ll be covering population, weather, schools, housing, cost of living, politics, and lifestyle. I’m here to give you the real scoop with no fluff. Let’s jump right in.
First, let’s talk people or the lack thereof. Wyoming is the least populous state in the US with just under 600,000 residents spread across to almost 100 square miles. There’s just six people per square mile, making it the second least dense state in the US. If you love privacy, Wyoming is definitely your spot. The three largest cities in Wyoming are Cheyenne with 65,000 people, Casper with 59,000 people, and Gillette with 34,000. Florida, on the other hand, is bustling with 22.6 million people across just under 70,000 square miles, giving a density of 405.45 people per square mile. Hillsborough County has 1.5 million people in 1300 square miles, which is a density of almost 1200 per square mile. Polk County is less dense with 788,000 people in 2000 square miles with about 392 people per square mile. The largest cities in Florida are Jacksonville with over 1 million people, Miami with 466,000, and Tampa with 409,000 people. Hillsborough buzzes with urban energy. Polk leans quieter, while Wyoming’s sparse population screams privacy. Which pace fits you, quiet or lively?
Weather defines your daily rhythm, and these states are polar opposites. Pun intended. Wyoming’s climate is cold with long winters and mild summers. There may be only a handful of days that reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit in an entire year. January lows average 15 degrees Fahrenheit with highs reaching 38 degrees and snowfall averages 58 inches annually across Wyoming. Summers are pleasant with July highs around 84 degrees and lows at 54 degrees. Expect a lot of wind. Wyoming’s known for gusts up to 40 miles an hour or more. Florida’s subtropical climate brings heat and humidity. Hillsborough County sees January highs of 71 degrees and lows of 53 degrees. July reaches 90 degrees with lows about 77 degrees with 47 inches of rain yearly, peaking during June to November, hurricane season. One in eight chance of a major storm. Polk County sees similar temperatures with 52 inches of rain, being slightly less humid inland. Wyoming’s dry, crisp air suits outdoor enthusiasts while Florida’s warmth is paradise for beach lovers. So this begs the question, which weather do you want to be in?
Education can be a huge priority, especially for those of you with kids or grandkids. So let’s compare schools. Wyoming has 49 unified school districts serving about 91,000 students. Laramie County School District, the largest, enrolls 14,000 students and boasts a 93% graduation rate, well above the national average of 86%. Wyoming spends just under $19,000 per pupil, ranking ninth nationally, with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to one for personalized learning. Florida has 67 districts serving 2.8 million students. Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the largest, enrolls 350,000 kids with a 89% graduation rate. Florida spends just over 11,000 per pupil, ranking 43rd, with a student-teacher ratio of 17 to one. Both states offer strong schools, but Wyoming’s smaller classes and higher funding give it an edge for individualized education. While Florida’s diversity and advanced programs appeal to urban families. Where would your kids thrive?
Housing is where dreams meet budgets. Wyoming’s median home price in 2024 was 430,000, up 3.1% year over year, driven by tight inventory. Laramie County sees homes sell at 97.4% of list price with the median values at 285,000 statewide. Low population growth, 0.5% annually, keeps demand steady, but not overheated. Florida’s median home price is 412,000, up 4.2%. Orange County’s median is 445,000, up 5.2%, reflecting Orlando’s demand. Polk County median is 335,000, up 3.8%, offering more affordability. Florida’s 1.9% population growth drives competition. Wyoming’s 0.61% property tax beats Florida’s 0.83%, but Florida’s homestead tax exemption can save you big. If you’re not familiar, the Florida’s homestead exemption is a property tax benefit for residents who own and primarily reside in their home. It reduces the taxable value by up to $50,000, lowering your property tax bill. Wyoming offers spacious rural homes. Hillsborough and Orange County feature urban condos while Polk has suburban charm. Which market fits your lifestyle?
Money matters, so let’s crunch the numbers. Wyoming’s cost of living is 93.8% of the national average with housing and utilities being the biggest expense. The median household income is roughly 75,000. Groceries and healthcare are slightly below national average, but rural areas mean higher gas costs. Florida’s cost of living is 101.2% of the national average, driven by housing and transportation, with the median household income at 68,000. Polk County’s cost is 98.2%, with a median income of about 63,000. Miami-Dade’s urban costs push expenses higher, but groceries and healthcare align with national norms. Both states lack state income tax, as we said before, a huge perk, but Florida’s sales tax, six to 8%, is slightly higher than Wyoming’s four to 6%. Wyoming suits budget conscious buyers seeking affordability. Florida fits those prioritizing amenities over savings.
Florida, much like Wyoming, is a stronghold for Republican values with both regions consistently supporting GOP candidates in recent elections. Wyoming has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968, while Polk County, Florida mirrored this trend giving 58% of its vote to Republican candidates in 2024. Sheriff Grady Judge’s tough, no nonsense approach to law enforcement in Polk County, seen in high profile operations like Fool Around and Find Out, resonates with the straightforward, independent spirit that defines Wyoming’s rural communities. This conservative alignment shapes local governance from property laws to community priorities, offering home buyers a stable like-minded environment in either state. For those seeking a home where traditional values and strong leadership prevail, both Polk County and Wyoming deliver.
Lifestyle definitely seals the deal. Wyoming is nature-driven, with Yellowstone, Grand Teton, natural hot springs, hunting, hiking, skiing, and festivals like Cheyenne Frontier Days. In Casper, you’ll find Hogadon Slopes and endless activities at David Street Station. Life is quiet here, perfect for remote workers or those craving peace, with small town charm and outdoor activities galore. Hillsborough County’s urban pulse in Tampa brings museums, top tier dining, and Tampa Bay sports, ideal for those who love a bustling city vibe with constant action. Orange County, centered in Orlando, is a theme park haven with Disney World, vibrant nightlife, and festivals, catering to thrill seekers and social butterflies. Polk County offers a quieter peace with serene lakes, golf courses, and small town festivals, blending relaxation with community. Hillsborough and Orange thrive on connection and energy. Polk and Wyoming lead toward tranquility and nature. Whether you’re into urban excitement or peaceful retreats, these places deliver unique experiences. Which of these provide access to the activities you enjoy during your free time with your kids, grandkids, family? Or which of these provide access to activities you enjoy or caters to your hobbies?
