Wyoming's Brutal Cold: Beauty or Breaking Point?

“The Coldest States in the U.S. – How Wyoming Compares”

“Thinking about moving to Wyoming? Let me just say – Great choice! But I have to talk about one thing that surprises a LOT of newcomers: the cold.
Today we’re diving into the coldest states in the U.S., where Wyoming ranks, and what that really means for you, if you’re moving here — the winter prep, the lifestyle trade-offs, and how to make sure you thrive, not just survive.”

I’m Alisha Collins with the Alisha Collins Real Estate Team and I’ve lived in Wyoming almost my entire life. I love the wide-open spaces, the mountain views, and the community. But yes — I also know our winters very well.

If you’re thinking about relocating to Wyoming, it’s important to understand not just the beauty, but also the climate. Because knowing what you’re getting into means you’ll be ready — and that makes all the difference in how much you actually enjoy life here.
So let’s dig into how Wyoming stacks up among the coldest states in the U.S., and what that means for homes, heating costs, winter gear, and your everyday life.

THE COLD STATES RANKING & WYOMING’S PLACE

First, let’s look at the numbers. Multiple sources list the “coldest states in America” by average annual temperature. One list puts Wyoming at around 42.3°F average yearly temperature, making it one of the top five coldest states in the U.S.
For example:

  • Alaska remains the coldest by a wide margin — averaging around 28.1°F.
  • Next come northern states like North Dakota, Minnesota, and Maine.
  • Wyoming usually comes in around #5 among coldest states for the U.S.

Now I know what you’re thinking – What drives that? Two big factors: our elevation (average around 6,700 ft) and our interior, mountain-plateau geography. High elevation means thinner air, which cools more quickly; being inland means less moderating influence from oceans. So yes — Wyoming is cold. But it’s also dry, which changes how that cold feels.

WHAT “COLD” MEANS IN WYOMING

So you’ve heard “42.3°F average.” But what does that mean? Let’s break it down a little further..

  • “Average annual temperature” means if you take the daily high + low each day for a year, then average those — not the same as your winter highs or lows.
  • In Wyoming you’ll see winter days that stay well below freezing. In some mountain valleys, your daytime high in winter might only reach the 20s or 30s °F.
  • Wind matters. Even if the thermometer says 15°F, with a 20 mph wind you’ll feel much colder.. With that wind chill it feels approximately 0°F. Frostbite on exposed skin becomes possible in about 30 minutes at this wind chill.
  • We also get heavy snow in certain areas (especially higher elevations). That means driveways, roofs, heating systems have to be winter-ready.
  • Short growing season & freeze risk: Gardening, landscaping, even outdoor projects are impacted more than in warmer states.

All this matters if you’re thinking about buying a home here. The house needs good insulation, a reliable heating system, snow-ready access, and you need to be comfortable with a winter that lasts.

PROS OF LIVING IN ONE OF THE “COLDEST” STATES

Okay — before you say “no thanks, I’ll pass” on the cold, let’s talk about the upside. Because there are real benefits to living in one of the coldest states.

  • Less humidity: Extreme cold in Wyoming often comes with dry air. That means fewer mosquitos, fewer “muggy” days, and better indoor comfort in winter (if the house is built properly of course).
  • A Snow lifestyle: If you love skiing, snowmobiling, biking, or just a winter wonderland, Wyoming delivers in spades.
  • Distinct seasons: You feel the change of seasons — fall colors, crisp air, snow, thaw, spring. It keeps life interesting.
  • Real estate advantage: Because many buyers are wary of the cold, you’ll find less competition in some markets — which can help you on the buy-side or sell-side.
  • Community & gear: People here know winter. They build for it. They prepare for it. That means you’re supported by infrastructure, culture, and people who live it.

CONS OR TRADE-OFFS TO CONSIDER

  • Heating & utilities: During the Winter months your heating bill will be higher. If you’re moving from a mild climate, your home budget should reflect that.
  • Maintenance: Snow removal, ice, frozen pipes, roof load, ensuring vehicles and driveways are winter-ready all add cost and effort.
  • Shorter outdoor season: If you garden, expect a shorter window. If you love outdoor projects, you’ll likely compress them into spring/summer.
  • Storm days & access: If you live in an area with remote access or rural homes? Winter storms can delay travel, impact power and roads, this requires preparation far in advance to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Cold tolerance: You’ll still get sunny winter days (which we do!). But you’ll also get “deep winter” where staying inside or being rugged for longer periods becomes part of life.

HOW TO PREPARE IF YOU’RE MOVING TO WYOMING

If you’re thinking of relocating to Wyoming (or already have!), here’s how to make sure you stay warm and comfortable.

  1. Choose the right house: Look for good insulation (walls/attic/floors), efficient heating (gas/propane/wood), quality windows, and good roof structure for snow.
  2. Check access: Driveway slope, snow clearance and road maintenance — especially if you’re in rural or foothill areas.
  3. Lifestyle adjustment: Winter hobbies you enjoy or even want to try? Embrace them. And make sure you have your winter gear ready. A mindset shift helps: cold isn’t “just a season” here — it’s part of the rhythm and daily routine.
  4. Neighborhood & location counts: Some areas of Wyoming with lower elevations or south facing slopes, will be milder. Others that are higher and more exposed will feel colder. Choose what fits you and your lifestyle best.
  5. Maintenance schedule: Get your HVAC checked before winter, make sure all windows and doors have proper seals, get your irrigation systems blown out before the first cold front, and of course prep your vehicles and emergency supplies. I guarantee –

You’ll thank yourself later!

WYOMING COMPARED TO OTHER STATES – IN PRACTICAL TERMS

So how does Wyoming really compare to other cold states?

  • Compared to North Dakota or Minnesota: Wyoming’s winters may be slightly less brutal on average days, but in higher elevation or exposed spots we can match or exceed them in extremes.
  • Compared to other Mountain West states: Wyoming often registers lower average temperatures (thanks to elevation and latitude) compared to, say, parts of Colorado or New Mexico.
  • Versus coastal/milder states: If you’re moving from a place that rarely sees snow or prolonged freeze, Wyoming will feel significantly colder and longer.
But here’s the thing: the worst days are manageable. And on average days, you’ll have plenty of sunny, crisp winter mornings if you prepare.
In short — yes, Wyoming is cold. One of the coldest in the nation. But that doesn’t mean it’s unlivable. With the right home and mindset, it can be deeply livable — and even enjoyable.

WHY SOME PEOPLE LOVE IT – AND SOME DON’T

I’ve seen people move here and thrive — because they came ready for winter: skis on the roof, snowshoes in the trunk, fire-pit fire going by December.
And I’ve seen people move here and struggle — because they underestimated how much winter really impacts their schedule, budget, even their mood.
If you love the outdoors, value space, you don’t mind layering up, and want four distinct seasons — Wyoming is extraordinary.
If you’re used to “cold” meaning 40’s in winter or a frost or two — then yes, it’ll be an adjustment. And that’s okay. The key is being honest about how much you love winter and how much you can prepare for it.

So here’s what you should take away from this video:

  • Wyoming ranks among the top coldest states in the U.S., thanks to high elevation and continental climate.
  • “Cold” here doesn’t just mean a few chilly weeks — it means a season, sometimes long, with snow, freeze, and wind.
  • But with preparation — the right home, mindset, and the right budget — you’ll do more than survive winter. You’ll actually enjoy it!
  • If you’re relocating, choose your home wisely, budget for winter realistically, and embrace the season rather than fight it. – It’s all about your mindset!
