8 Surprising Reasons I Call Casper, Wyoming Home

I meet people from all over the country and they always ask me why I chose to live in Wyoming. Well, as you might know, or maybe you don’t know, I am not technically a Wyoming native, but I have been here for all but five years of my life, so basically I feel like I am a Wyoming native. Hi, I’m Alisha Collins with the Alisha Collins Real Estate Team. Let me tell you why I live in Casper, Wyoming, and why I love living here. I have been a Wyomingite for 42 years now, but I haven’t always lived in Casper. I originally lived in California and of course I came with my parents when they moved from California and landed right here in Wyoming when I was five years old. I grew up in Lander and then like many Wyomingites, I went to Laramie for college, Go Pokes. When I was done with the college, I moved to Casper for a job right outta college. I have to admit, I did not love it here as at first, but I gave it time and it took me about a year to really love it here in Casper and mainly because I had a support system in Laramie and I needed to create that here in Casper and I did it. So now that I do love it, and I stayed here for over 23 years, let me tell you why.

Number one, population. Casper’s population does go up and down a bit, but usually stays near the $50,000 mark. When I moved here…[Speaker] If you say so. You probably should leave that, right? Let me say that again. It usually stays near the 50,000 people mark. When I moved here so many years ago, it had just hit the 50,000 mark and while it has grown, we are currently sitting at the 58,000 mark, which I still think gives a small town feel with all of the big city amenities. I just kind of feel like Goldilocks when it comes to the population. Casper’s population is not too small, not too big, instead, it’s just right.

Number two, all the amenities. It might not seem like it to somebody who is used to a big city like Denver or Billings, but compared to Lander where I grew up, there are so many more amenities right here in Casper. I’m talking about a variety of restaurants, from everything to barbecue to Chinese, steak dinner, to Italian, lots of shopping opportunities from great local shops to big franchise stores, and beautiful parks, great schools, and so much more.

Number three, another reason why I love it here might surprise those of you who live here too. The weather. Yes, the weather to a degree of course. While we have all four seasons here, I do not love all the seasons equally, I love the spring, the summer, and the fall as brief as it is some years, and sometimes I even love the winter, but the wind does get to me just like it does other people. I am most definitely not immune to the draining effects of a constant wind during those times when it seems like it will never stop, but then it does and man, oh man, do those times make up for the wind?

Number four, people. Sure, I talk about the population, but I’m talking about the actual people. I think some of the most genuine and kind people live right here in Casper. It really is a wonderful community. In addition to Casper being a great little community, I think you really can find your people here. I know I did.

Number five, a great place to live. What is a place to live without, well, a place to live? The housing cost in Casper is below the national average. It helps make living here a bit more affordable and people can afford to buy a home or some can afford to buy more home for their money than a lot of other places. There are not many places where you can afford to buy a home when you are just starting out, but you can here. My son was able to buy a house at 20 years old.

Number six, opportunity. I think Wyoming is just one of those places with unlimited potential. You can find the perfect opportunity if you look for it and are willing to work for it. Casper has a lot of entrepreneurs for a reason. I believe the business climate here embraces gumption.

Number seven, activities, so many activities. And yes, a lot are outdoorsy, but the community really is trying to build more things for people to do both indoors and outside. Live music, art, and community events happen all year round. If you like outdoor activities, Casper really is a great place for you with everything from youth sports, to hunting and fishing, and really just everything in between. Skiing and snowboarding in the winter and water skiing in the summer, hiking, biking, camping, and more. Really just about anything you want to do, you can do it in and around Casper. If you have watched any of my videos, you know that one of my favorite outdoor activities is horseback riding, which is definitely not something you can do just anywhere.

Number eight, breathtaking landscape. I love that I can step outside and no matter which direction I look there really is something special about the landscapes around Casper. Sometimes I think we take for granted that you can see for miles and in all the surrounding areas, there is beauty.

I love how spectacular the sunsets are. I enjoy the sunrises when I catch them. And the mountain: looking at it from afar or taking a drive and looking around. I even love the seas of sagebrush. I have to say that the wide open spaces have their very own kind of beauty that you just can’t find anywhere else. Of all the places in the world I could live, I chose to live in Casper because I really do love it here. I have shared just a few of the reasons why I love living here, but everyone has their own reason. If you decide you’re ready to call Casper your home, I would love to help you.
