I have one word for you about winter in Wyoming, snow. Hi, I’m Alisha Collins with Remax The Group and the Alisha Collins Real Estate team. Let’s talk about the Winter Wonderland right here in Casper, Wyoming. I’m not sure what you’ve heard about winter in Wyoming. Some of it’s probably true, some of it’s probably really exaggerated, but I am here to give you some facts about winter in Wyoming. More specifically, facts about snow in Wyoming. Obviously, Wyoming gets much more snow than Arizona and Hawaii. But how does it stack up to the States that actually gets snow? Depends on what chart you look at and what city. As a state, Wyoming ranks ninth for snowfall with an average of 51 inches, narrowly beating out Wyoming by a whopping 51 inches is Massachusetts. Vermont tops the list with over 89 inches of snow annually. So Wyoming hits towards the top of the list. But over 30 inches from the very top. Wyoming’s landscape is varied, and so is the annual snowfall within the state. Some of the areas with lower elevation see only 15 to 20 inches of snow annually. In contrast, mountains near Yellowstone National Park often get over 200 inches of snow every year. Since Casper is my home, let’s take a look how Casper stacks up in the snow department. According to currentresults.com, Casper had an average of 22.8 days per year, that snowed more than 1/10th of an inch. That doesn’t seem like a lot, right? Well, those 22 days accumulated over 75 inches of snow. That puts Casper above our statewide average. nerdwallet.com has snowfall totals by city. And while Casper isn’t Wyoming’s first showing on the list, that goes to Lander, where I’m from, Casper has a pretty high ranking for the entire country at 27th on the annual snowfall list. So, what do all these numbers really mean? Well, you get to sometimes experience a white Christmas and you definitely get to enjoy basically every snow sport there is right here in Casper. If we don’t have it, you’ll be able to find it by driving for a couple of hours. Ever hear of Jackson Hole? So what do I mean by every snow sport? Well, with Casper Mountain right at the South end of town, it’s full outdoor sports opportunities. Everything from snowmobiling to skiing, easy to get to on Casper Mountain Road, you will find Hogadon Basin Ski Area for your Alpine skiing and snowboarding pleasure. Or head over to the Casper Mountain Outdoor Center, the premier destination for biathlon training. In addition to biathlon training, the center is used for recreational Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. Another cool place where you can Nordic ski and snow shoe is Casper mountain Trail Center. They have a network of trails to enjoy, some with lights, so you can ski or snowshoe even at night. Have you ever ridden your bike on the snow? Well, it’s possible, right here in Casper. That bike riding on the same trails that are used for Nordic skiing. And if that sounds like it’s a bit too adventurous for you, there are several sledding hills around town, for some fun, inexpensive family fun. So let’s chat a little bit about when it snows it Casper. Yes, we talked about the average number of days, but when do those days happen? Are they all in December and January? Well no. We mostly consider winter to last from November through March. But, snow can fall in Casper almost every month of the year. We typically have our first snow in September, like right now, and our last in April. However, we have had snow in June before. Sure it was over 10 years ago, and it was only 1/10th of an inch, but hey, it happened. Those 22 days of snowfall are usually pretty spread out fairly evenly over the month of September through April. It definitely isn’t abnormal to see snow as early as September and as late as May. Winter months in Casper can be cold and snowy, but, they also are gonna be super fun. You can’t ski without enough of the white stuff to glide and without snow, there is a zero chance of a white Christmas. So, if you think you can handle 22.8 days of snow, maybe Casper is the right place for you to live.
