Working in Wyoming
As exciting as life in Casper may sound, you probably have to consider your career options before joining me for trail rides on Casper Mountain or grabbing your fishing pole and hitting the river.

Hi, I’m Alisha Collins with RE/MAX The Group and the Alisha Collins Real Estate Team. Obviously, real estate is a great career option in WY, but there are many other options for careers in the area if your expertise lies elsewhere.

It’s difficult to measure a “Top Employer”.  Different lists measure companies using different standards. I looked at a bunch of different lists, from the size of the company to the number of Wyoming residents they employ, and put together some data that will hopefully help you decide if a career in Wyoming is right for you.

If you love the idea of a government job with good benefits and retirement packages but education isn’t for you, Wyoming also offers 1700 different federal jobs through the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior, FBI Offices, Forest Service, National Park Service, TSA roles at our airports and more. In fact – according to the Bureau of Labor, Wyoming has the highest percentage of government workers of any state, employed at the federal, state, and local level.

Still not thinking we have a career for you? The State of Wyoming employs 3,840 people. From the State Attorneys to the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game and everything in between, there are opportunities for a HUGE variety of passions and skill sets.

Medical professionals are needed more than ever in WY right now. The Cheyenne Regional Medical center is a Top Employer in Cheyenne and Wyoming with over 1300 employees, with three other large hospitals in Casper, Gillette and Douglas right behind at 413-1000 each.

Remember, hospitals employ more than just Doctors! Each hospital has business, kitchen, cleaning, billing & finance, maintenance, and health insurance staff just to name a few possible areas to find employment. Wyoming Medical Center, now part of Banner Health and Summit Medical Center, and Elkhorn Rehab Hospital are in Casper, while Memorial Hospital of Converse County is in nearby Douglas.

If you work in health insurance and claims, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming, an insurance provider employs over 200 people in the state.

For those of you who enjoy my travel content, don’t worry – there are employment opportunities in our tourism and hospitality industry as well! Jackson Lake Lodge employs 1000 workers! Other hot spots include Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. People love working at Grand Teton Lodge and Goosewing Ranch. Our skiing and snowboarding mountains offer plentiful seasonal positions for outdoor enthusiasts.

If small city life is more your speed, all of our larger cities have hotels for tourists and business travelers alike. Anyone with experience in hotel management, desk work, hosting services, housekeeping, catering, or sales should check out opportunities with them.

On the retail side of things, Sierra Trading Post has multiple Wyoming locations and several hundred employees. Have you ever looked at the employees of outdoor outfitters and wished you could share your passion for outdoor adventure all day long? A career with Sierra Trading Post may make that dream a reality. Sportsman’s Warehouse (now owned by Cabela’s) is another retail outdoor outfitter with six locations in Wyoming. If large retailers aren’t your cup of tea – you’re in luck! There are numerous locally-owned outdoor outfitters and specialty shops throughout the region.  Other large retail employers in the area include Walmart, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Target, Ross, Marshalls, and many more.

If you have shipping and receiving, warehouse, or inventory management experience, check out the Walmart distribution center in Cheyenne. They have over 600 employees!

It doesn’t matter how rural you get, people always need a place to store, borrow, and manage their money. Banking is another common job source in Wyoming with opportunities ranging from small local credit unions to major federal banks. First Interstate Bank is a local favorite that employs 1600 people… and yes, for those who love the small-town lifestyle including banking – we also have several smaller “hometown banks” that are looking for the right employees.

Although the industry has experienced a lot of ups and downs, The energy sector has been a major employer of Wyoming residents for many years. We have just about every type of energy in Wyoming, coal, natural gas, oil and gas, and even wind energy. Employment can be found in the energy extraction field as well as many many different supporting industries, like construction, engineering, truck driving, and supply management.

Some top employers in the energy sector are: North Antelope, Arch Coal, Elkhorn Construction, Sinclair Refinery, Halliburton, True Drilling, and their parent company, True Cos.

Finally, our agriculture industry is a huge and growing part of the economy, as well as the heart and soul of Wyoming. We have jobs for ranch hands, field workers, dairymen, agribusiness experts, equestrians, veterinarians, and more.  You may be surprised to learn that In February 2020, the USDA accepted the Wyoming Hemp Program and in August 2020, the final rules for accepting applications and implementing this program were put in place.

Many people might think that because Wyoming has been tied to the energy industry for a long time, those are the only jobs here, but as you can see, there are a ton of other employment opportunities for people of all skill levels and expertise. True to the Wyoming Entrepreneurial spirit, there are always more being added!

If your concern over lack of career opportunities is stopping you from living out your dream of living rural, I hope this helped open your eyes to the many possibilities that Wyoming has to offer.
