Wyomings Call: The Top 8 Reasons You Can’t Ignore!
Over the last four years, I have had the privilege of talking with so many of you who have been watching my videos about Wyoming. By the way, I want you to know how much I absolutely love, love, love talking to all of you. Many of you are drawn to Wyoming for different reasons, and I wanted to share the top eight reasons I hear the most of why people are moving to Wyoming.
Number one, the incredibly low population. Our entire state has less people than most individual counties across the country. Our capital city is also the largest city in Wyoming, Cheyenne. Cheyenne is in the southeastern part of the state near Colorado and has a population of around 64,000. Casper, of course, my favorite city has a population of around 58,500 and is situated right in the middle of the state. Our one and only state university is located in Laramie, located near Cheyenne, but has a much lower population than Cheyenne and Casper with around 31,500 people, depending on if the college students are there. Wyoming offers several other charming options such as Thermopolis, home to Wyoming’s largest mineral hot springs, and boasting a population of around 2,800. Saratoga, another picturesque town with hot springs has a population of just under 1700. It offers various recreational opportunities like hunting, fishing, shopping, and stunning views of Wyoming’s natural beauty. Sheridan situated in the northern part of the state and relatively close to Montana is a great mid-size town with just under 19,000 residents. Story located just south of Sheridan is another excellent choice. It’s a mere 20 minute drive from the city and has a population of 887. Nestled in the hills with an elevation exceeding 5,000 feet, Story provides easy access to Sheridan’s amenities while allowing you to savor the beauty of nature. While Wyoming does offer a mix of small, mid-size and larger cities, it’s worth noting that the overall population is lower compared to our neighboring states, so you won’t find the bustling metropolitan areas like Denver or Billings. Of course, there are many other places around Wyoming that you may love. We suggest that you come to Wyoming for a visit before you move to any of these areas.
Number two, wide open spaces. Wyoming, one of the United States’ larger states by land area is known for its vastness. It covers an enormous area of about 97,813 square miles, making it the 10th largest state in the country. To put this in perspective, it’s larger than most well-known states like New York and Pennsylvania even though it doesn’t have as many people. The sheer size of Wyoming becomes evident when you explore its diverse landscapes, ranging from majestic mountain ranges like the Tetons and the Wind River Range, and the Big Horns to the wide open prairies and high plains. When we compare Wyoming to its neighboring states in the mountain west region, its size truly stands out. It surpasses Colorado, Montana, and Idaho in land area, making it the largest state in this part of the country. This vast expansive land provides Wyoming residents and visitors with abundant opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it’s hiking in the mountains, skiing in the winter, or spotting wildlife in the expansive wilderness, Wyoming’s size allows for a wide range of outdoor activities. Additionally, this vast land area contributes to the unique sense of openness and freedom that’s often associated with the state, making it a place where people can truly connect with nature and experience a sense of spaciousness that’s hard to find in more crowded places.
Number three, politics. I can’t even count how many of you tell me before I’ve even met you that you do not follow the political party of your state. Wyoming’s political landscape is characterized by its deep rooted, Conservative values and strong Republican dominance. It’s often considered one of the most reliably Republican states in the nation. Wyoming consistently votes for Republican candidates in presidential elections and has not supported a Democratic presidential candidate since we supported Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. This enduring Conservative streak is reflective of the state’s rural and Libertarian ethos, where individualism and limited government intervention holds significant appeal. The state’s political priorities align closely with its economic interests, particularly within the energy sector. Wyoming is a major coal producer and has a substantial oil and natural gas industry. As such, energy policy and issues related to resource extraction play a central role in its politics. The state’s leaders typically advocate for policies that support fossil fuel industries, often clashing with national efforts to address climate change and transition to cleaner energy sources. Wyoming’s political landscape also includes a strong emphasis on gun rights, limited taxation, and individual freedoms. While the state has a small population, its political influence on the national scale remains substantial due to its representation in the US Senate and its contribution to the country’s energy production.
Four, guns, yep, I said it. Wyoming is known for its relaxed and permissive gun laws, reflecting the state’s strong emphasis on individuals, second amendment rights, and a culture of responsible gun ownership. The state’s laws are among the most gun friendly in the United States. In Wyoming, residents do not need a special permit to purchase or possess firearms, including handguns, shotguns, and rifles. There are also no state requirements for firearm registration or waiting periods. This constitutional carry approach allows Wyoming residents to carry concealed firearms without a permit, although the option to obtain a concealed carry permit is available for reciprocity with other state. Additionally, Wyoming has relatively few restrictions on the types of firearms and accessories that can be owned and possessed, making it a welcoming place for gun enthusiasts. While the state does prohibit prohibit the possession of firearms by certain individuals such as convicted felons and individuals with restraining orders, its overall approach to gun laws is lenient and aligned with a strong pro-gun culture. It’s worth noting that while state laws are permissive, federal regulations still apply, including the requirement for background checks, for firearm purchases when purchasing a firearm from licensed dealers and record keeping requirements under the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, NICS. However, these federal requirements pertain to background checks and not registration in the sense of creating a database for gun owners.
Five, moving to be near relatives and or friends or perhaps moving away from them. If none of the other reasons are good enough for you, then this might be yours. Maybe your relatives or friends have moved out here and they love it and you can’t make it here fast enough. We see this happen, someone from your family or a close friend moves to this wide open and beautiful state and they have convinced you to join them. On the flip side, maybe you’re looking to go where almost no one can find you, an escape, if you will, from the hustle and bustle of where you currently live. Wyoming’s wide open spaces may be the best bet. Often people move here to escape the chaos of the city and for the need of something new, a change of pace, or a change in atmosphere. Wyoming can give that to people.
Six, a job transfer. Wyoming has long been a magnet for individuals seeking job changes, particularly in sectors like healthcare, oil and gas, or education. The state’s healthcare industry has seen steady growth with the demand for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. Wyoming’s rural nature and the presence of various healthcare facilities create opportunities for those looking to make a difference in underserved communities. The allure of a balanced work life dynamic in a place with abundant recreation opportunities also attracts medical professionals to the state. The oil and gas industry plays a pivotal role in Wyoming’s economy, offering lucrative job prospects for those with the necessary skills and experience. With substantial reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas, Wyoming has consistently drawn workers in the energy sector. Jobs in drilling, extraction, and energy production have been particularly appealing as the state energy resources remain a crucial driver of economic stability. Additionally, Wyoming’s commitment to responsible resource development ensures a continuous demand for skilled workers in this sector. On the educational front, teaching jobs in Wyoming’s public schools and higher education institutions have attracted educators looking for opportunities to shape young minds in the state with a strong focus on education and community involvement. The state’s relatively small class sizes and close-knit communities provide a unique and rewarding teaching experience for educators seeking a change in their career path.
Seven, weather. I know with our crazy wind and windstorms, this may surprise some of you. Believe it or not, some individuals and families are drawn to Wyoming primarily for its weather, seeking refuge from scorching hot summers in states like Texas. For those who have endured sweltering temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit, Wyoming’s cooler summers and milder climates can be a welcome relief. The state’s high elevation and lower humidity levels create an environment where summer temperatures are often more moderate, making outdoor activities and enjoying the natural beauty of Wyoming, a comfortable and enjoyable experience. For those of you who appreciate the change of seasons, Wyoming offers a diverse climate and a distinct spring, summer, fall, and winter experience. While many may associate Wyoming with cold winters and heavy snowfall, there are indeed people who embrace the snowy months with enthusiasm. For winter enthusiasts, Wyoming snowy landscape provide a playground for activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. The crisp, clean air and pristine snow covered vistas offer a unique charm that attracts those who relish the cold. Wyoming’s locals have adapted to the winters by learning to dress for the weather and make the most of the season both indoors and out. The state’s winter winds while sometimes challenging, have a silver lining as they keep pollution levels low, contributing to the cleaner air and the healthier living conditions, a definite perk for those Moving to Wyoming in search of a refreshing change in weather.
Eight, hunting and fishing enthusiasts often consider Wyoming a dream destination and for good reason. The state’s vast and diverse landscape from rolling planes to towering mountain ranges offer a wealth of opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Wyoming is renowned for its thriving wildlife populations, including iconic species of elk, deer, pronghorn, and bison, making it a prime location for hunting enthusiasts. The state’s abundant public lands and well-managed wildlife habitats provide ample opportunities for both residents and non-residents to partake in hunting adventures. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or a novice, Wyoming’s wilderness areas offer a chance to experience the thrill of the hunt while enjoying the serenity of the great outdoors. Likewise, Wyoming is a paradise for anglers with its pristine lakes, rivers, and streams teeming with a variety of fish species, including trout, walleye, and pike. The state boasts some of the most iconic fishing rivers in the country, such as North Platte River and the Snake River, which draws anglers from far and wide. Wyoming’s commitment to conservation and sustainable fishing practices ensure that fish populations remain healthy and abundant. Whether you prefer fly fishing in a tranquil mountain stream or casting your line in a serene alpine lake, Wyoming offers unparalleled fishing experiences that allow you to connect with nature and test your angling skills in breathtaking surroundings.
